ok. Make sure to read entire sections. There are endless decision trees that
will make your head spin.

NFPA 101, 06ed
Yes,
Determined from Ch43 that we had modifications to the existing building
but since it was over 50% it was considered extensive modifications.
We need to comply with sections 43.4,43.5 and 43.6. 43.5.1.3 states
that newly constructed elements, components, and systems shall comply
with the
requirements of other sections of this code applicable to new
construction.

Don't jump too quick...did you read Ch 43?

43.1.2.1 Any building undergoing repair, renovation, modification, or
reconstruction (see 43.2.2.1.1 through 43.2.2.1.4) shall comply with
both of the following:

    (1) Requirements of the applicable existing occupancy chapters
(see Chapters 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, 29, 31, 33, 37, 39, 40,
and 42)
    (2) Requirements of the applicable section of this chapter (see
Sections 43.3, 43.4, 43.5, and 43.6)

The definitions of repair, renovation...is in 43.2.2.

Thanks Duane,
09 IEBC - Level 3 alteration
After reading 101 more closely I can see that we have a "extensive
modification" and all the newly constructed areas are to follow 101
applicable to new construction.

Need more info...

06 or 09 of the IEBC?
what level of alteration per the IEBC?

Is NFPA 101 applicable? If so, you need to read 4.6.7 Building
Rehabilitation before going to chapter 30 or 31.

Subject: existing apartment buildings

NFPA 13, 07 ed, IEBC, 07ed

Does an existing apartment building that has been remodeled qualify for
section 21.20.20?

There has been no modifications to the building height or area so it
looks like it complies per

section 202 definition of the IEBC.
