Kudos for asking the question instead of guessing! If you have access to
sprinkler age archives, Roland Huggins wrote a great article on tank sizing
several years ago that would be a great reference. In the meantime, there
are two schools of thought when it comes to sizing a tank. The conservative
approach is sprinkler demand x required duration (which is based on hazard).
The hose allowance can be sticky. If the tank is your sole source of water
supply then you need to include the hose allowance as well. The same table
includes the duration you are looking for. Also, call a tank supplier and
they will be happy to help...

Subject: Fire Pump with storage tank

When you size a tank, do you size it for 150% of the fire pump demand or
just the sprinkler demand? Would you also need to include the hose stream
if there is no inside hose stations? This is the first time I'm doing one
of these, and I would hate to get this wrong.
