The O-Ring is the seal, It's in the waterway, That was the problem. Supposedly (I don't think a final conclusion was ever reached apart from there is a problem and they need replacing--maybe an legal issue keeping things quiet) the ring would swell causing too much friction between the walls of the water and and whatever that interior pintel/guide the o-ring is wrapped around so it couldn't move out of the waterway. Too much swelling could not cause it to discharge unless it got so big it somehow disintegrated.
