If I recall the committee's conversation on the proposal to add a master alarm,
it was predicated on the issue of rampant theft of brass building system
components in the electrical, plumbing and fire protection fields. The
simplistic (simple-minded?) goal being that tampering with, vandalizing or
attempting to steal parts of a system, or a mechanical failure should set off a
notification alarm. So yes, I guess it's more supervisory in nature from the
perspective of NFPA 14 but on a combined system it's prudent to help zone the
fire sprinkler waterflow alarms both locally and off site.

The foregoing is my opinion only and does not necessarily represent the opinion
or intent of the NFPA 14 Technical Committee on Standpipe and Hose Systems.

Sometimes the thing itself, because of what it is, can be misleading as ti it's
intent. I think the "master" flow switch is the one used to read flow itself,
while the individual floor flow switches are for locating where flow is, i.e.,
zoning.

On another topic though I can see the utility for this on a combination pipe,
but not the reasoning for a flow switch on just a standpipe, unless it's being
used for monitoring, not alarm. My presumption is that if the standpipe is
being used because of fire the FD is the one using it and they already know.

A little background, Steve?
