Thanks Daniel. Still learning what's new in the 13 edition. Now it looks like
we can have pockets formed by I-beams but not when the I-beams are covered with
gyp-rock (hehe)?

Subject: RE: QR Reduction for Obstructed Construction

2013-11.2.3.2.3.1 (4) ..no unprotected ceiling pockets as allowed by 8.6.7 &
8.8.7 exceeding 32 sq. ft. (to tie in the previous question)

Ceiling pocket definition 2013-3.3.4 & the Annex (not enforceable, I know)
speaking to intent of the definition, and specifically addressing QR reduction
and how it is not to be used for structural members(the definition).. This was
added in the 2013 edition, the 2010 edition only speaks to application to
obstructed/unobstructed and not the QR reduction.

So a ceiling pocket cannot be defined by obstructed construction. So you
comply with the QR rules?

Am I following that correctly?

Does it say that it can't? We take it in attics all the time ...

I asked once before about ceiling pockets vs. beam pockets and didn't get a
nibble so I'll try a slightly different twist on the question. Can the QR
reduction be applied to obstructed construction? Can the reduction be taken for
twin tee construction?
