NFPA 13 (2013) section 8.6.4.1.3.1 states "Unless the requirements of
8.6.4.1.3.2 or 8.6.4.1.3.3 are met, sprinklers under or near the peak of a
roof or ceiling shall have deflectors located not more than 36 in. (914 mm)
vertically
down from the peak as indicated in Figure 8.6.4.1.3.1(a) and Figure
8.6.4.1.3.1(b)."

Per section 8.6.4.1.3.1, the maximum vertical distance below the peak is 36
inches unless the requirements  of sections 8.6.4.1.3.2 or 8.6.4.1.3.3 are
met.

My opinion is section 8.6.4.1.3.3 requires a minimum horizontal clearance
of 24 inches, and therefore allows the deflector to be located at a
vertical distance greater than 36 inches down from the peak.
