David, I am referencing NFPA 13, 2010 ed. Chapter 8.6.5.2, Obstructions to sprinkler discharge. If Light or Ordinary Hazard Occupancy you can apply 8.6.5.2.1.4, Structural members only. A.8.6.5.2.1.4, discusses that nonstructural elements are exempt but must also comply with "Beam Rule" 8.6.5.1.2 and "Wide Obstruction Rule" 8.6.5.3.3.
