I've run into this several times. I could only convince the Arch they were wrong when I was the AHJ. I'm sure they didn't agree but didn't appeal which was their only option. As a contactor and engineer I have not been as successful. So I tell them, they ignore me, and sometimes AHJ flags it and then it's somehow still my fault. There are times though when the AHJ goes along incorrectly and then I still look like I did it wrong. I'd suggest you don't argue too much, tell them they are wrong, if bidding give them both bids and see how it all shakes out and I hope you have thick skin.

I have a scenario where the architect is trying to eliminate the requirement for sprinkler protection in a combustible wood framed attic. This is an 13,000sqft I-4 occupancy. The architect is saying they will be compartmentalizing the attic into less than 3,000sqft fire areas with the use of draft curtains. My question is, can the architect do this and still be code compliant without attic fire protection? Thanks. Will Crisler Southeastern Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc. 143 Enterprise Dr P.O.
