Aaron,
Based on the data in NFPA 24, sections 10.8.2 and 10.8.10.8.3
(1)-(5) inclusive, my thoughts would be, in order:
1) Yes, you can install DR-18 with thrust blocks only, per 10.8.2.1
2) Yes, a fabricated flange can connect directly to a Uni-Flange, and
not require restraint, per 10.8.3 (3)
3) There would be no need for a thrust block, per 10.8.3 (3)
4) A restrainer for C900 would most likely meet the definition of a
'locking mechanical joint' and would not require a thrust block, per
10.8.3 (1)
See 10.1.3 for the use of steel pipe in supplying FDC's, however don't
ignore 10.1.6.2.
I believe those same sections are in NFPA 13, as chapter 10 of -24 was a
direct import into -13.
It should be noted that the above is my opinion as a member of the NFPA
Standard for the Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and Their
Appurtenances Committee in accordance with the NFPA Regulations
Governing Committee Projects and should therefore not be considered, nor
relied upon, as the official position of the NFPA or its Committees

I'm on a project where the underground isn't clear, I mean I'm used to
restrained megalugs and fittings where thrust blocks are not used. Now this
project is using just bell and spigot C900 (DR18) with push on fittings that
will have thrust blocks. With lined DI52 with flanges to connect to C900
pipe with PVC uni-flanges. I can't seem to find anything conclusive in NFPA
24.
1) Can DR-18 pipe just be installed without the use bell joint
restraint because of using thrust blocks?
2) Can you connect lined DI52 fabricated with a flange directly to C900
via a PVC uni-flange?
3) They are also planning on connecting to the PIV NRS valve with the
uni-flange.
4) It appears you can use C900 restrainers with push on fittings but
only have serrated so I'm assuming we could use those as bell restrainers.
Another thing and I can't find a code to back it is the use of DR14 pipe for
the FDC line. The ordered all DR18, long time before I got here, and the
plans/specifications doesn't mention it. Is it code or just local
regulations that I'm confusing it with?
Thanks!
