It needs to meet the definition of limited combustible (8.15.1.2.2 2010 
edition) or you could just apply 8.15.1.2.9 (if its less than 55 sqft).  If you 
sprinkler it just apply 8.15.1.5  (2)

Subject: Slatted ceilings - sprinklers above

We have a room which contains a “simulated” wood slatted ceiling.  There is ½” 
gap between the slats (6in wide)but they will be laying a type of black sound 
mat on top of the ceiling to close up the openings between them.  The GC’s EOR 
(not a fire engineer) is stating the we will need sprinkler protection above 
the ceiling because the sound mat is not fire rated.  We have protection below 
but not above.  Who is right?
