A king’s beautiful daughter reaches marriageable age and the kingdom is
besieged by princely courters from across the fairy tale land. Wishing to
marry his daughter off to the prince most likely to be a thoughtful king
when the old king dies and he inherits the throne, the king devises a
riddle for the many princes to solve. The king places a note that states,
“You may marry my daughter and , when I die, inherit my realm.” He places
this note in one of three boxes. In the other boxes he places poisonous
snakes. The first box is made of gold and has the inscription, “Your prize
is inside this box,” carved into the lid. The second box is made of silver
and carved on its lid is the inscription, “Your desired prize is not inside
this box.” The third box, made of lead, states, “The inscription on the
gold box is untrue.” The king tells the princes that there is only one true
statement on all three boxes.

Presuming none of the Princes want to open a box containing a poisonous
snake in which box is the desired prize?

A. Gold

B. Silver

C. Lead
