Ben,
The soffit has to be next to a ‘wall’ for you to be able to use the “soffit obstruction rule”. Since you’ve stated that it ‘in the middle of the sanctuary’, you can’t apply this rule and will need sprinklers under the soffit unless you can comply with the distances allowed in the ‘beam blocking rule’. I have two soffits next to each other in the middle of a sanctuary. If you look at the attached screen cap, one is labeled A and the other is B. Now B is less than 30" deep and I can throw water underneath it with the head in the drop ceiling using the soffit obstruction rule. Soffit B I was going to treat as an obstruction less than 4 feet wide with heads on both sides of it. Can I look at the soffits separately like that, or do I have to count them together as an obstruction over 4 feet wide and add a head in soffit B? Concealed QR heads (standard coverage), NFPA 13 2013 edition, light hazard, non-combustible construction for the soffits.
