    then that's a completely different issue than I originally believed from 
your initial comments.  I'm in agreement with Steve Leyton, this space would be 
similar to a mansard, and unless that insulation was there, I don't know how it 
could be allowed to omit sprinklers.

    Yes, I had an architect ask for something like that a few years back on a 
design in Nevada.  He was quite adamant that it was necessary.  The price my 
contract client gave him for adding something like that which was not covered 
by either 13 or the IFC suddenly resulted in an epiphany that maybe it wasn't 
required.
    Has he given you some code reference to support what he's asked for?
