Bill,

As ‘unconventional’ as this sounds, you could put another sidewall under the
soffit instead of the pendant and have it cover the area under the soffit on
both sides of the room. Never done this before and it would look ‘weird’ but
per code, it would work without adding the 3rd sprinkler in the room.

Subject: Need head in soffit at far end of room?

A wise man once said, "a question well asked is a problem half solved", so I'll
do my best.
I have a bedroom in a 13R occupancy which measures 14'x16'. There is a 24"wide
x 18" deep soffit around the perimeter of the room. I have a residential
horizontal sidewall head in the soffit 12" below the ceiling along the 14' wall
and a pendent head in the soffit just below.

Here is the question: The distance from the sidewall head to the soffit at the
far end of the room is 12'. Since I am 6" above the bottom of the soffit, the
minimum distance required by 8.10.7.1.3 (2010) is 13'. Do I need another head
under the far end soffit? It seems ridiculous, but what do you think?

Thanks much.
