I came across a "unique" situation, for me at least, today. We have a set
of architectural plans that has TJI construction with gyp board attached to
metal channels attached to the underside of the TJI. That is what we
typically see. However, we also typically see at least one layer (but
typically filled) of insulation at the bottom of the joist space. This
allows the space to have sprinklers eliminated per NFPA 13 (2013):
8.15.1.2.6. We have to do the increased design area but at least, no
sprinklers in the concealed space.

Well, this architect has stated that they are indicating the floor / ceiling
assemblies to not have insulation and that is how it is going to be built.
Yes, we are dealing with "one of those types." So, since this no longer
meets 8.15.1.2.6 and I can't find another exemption it appears that
sprinklers would be required in every pocket of the TJI structure. And,
since it is flat and <36" deep then we would need the specially listed
sprinklers. Am I way off target here, or is this how it would really be?

We have talked to the GC and they are going to put in the single layer of
batt insulation so we are in compliance with 8.15.1.2.6. It just seemed
strange that there wouldn't be some other exception to eliminate sprinklers
in that space.
