Which code section requires automatic standpipes for detention facilities? How
long has that been in the code?

No. They didn’t have a requirement for automatic standpipes when the current
system was installed as the fire pump is clearly not sized for automatic. We
are adding hose connections to meet the building code and replacing the fire
pump.

Any idea of the original design criteria?

I have a building that doesn’t require standpipes based on height, but it does
require a Class III automatic standpipe system because it is a detention
facility. It is 3 floors and we have more than 3 hose connections on each
floor. It is a fully sprinklered building but it is not a combined
sprinkler/standpipe system. There is a single supply main for the standpipes
that supplies multiple hose connections on each floor (not in stairwells).

From what I can tell, the standpipe system demand is 750 gpm @ 100 psi. NFPA
14, 2013 edition, 7.10.1.2.2 says if we have a horizontal standpipe on a Class
III system that supplies three or more connections on a floor, we need to
calculate 250 gpm at the 3 hydraulically most remote hose connections for a
total of 750 gpm (at 100 psi). We are also to include the topmost outlet of
each of the other standpipes; however, since we technically only have a single
standpipe, I don’t believe we would add another 250 gpm?? Is that correct? I
would just flow 250 gpm at the 3 most remote hose connections on third floor??

Thank you.
