Forgive me if this has been addressed before, but I cannot find any specific
guidance on it. In addressing sprinkler temperatures, in the 2013 version of
13 I am a bit confused about the way attics are addressed. 8.3.2.5 (5) states
"Sprinklers in an unventilated, concealed space, under an uninsulated roof, or
in an unventilated attic shall be intermediate-temp...". Per this wording, it
seems there is a differentiation between a ventilated attic and an unventilated
one. However, in table 8.3.2.5 (b) the chart appears to indicate Intermediate
Temp heads are required in Attics regardless of ventilation.

Also, what is the difference between an Attic and a concealed space in a peaked
roof building. Table 8.3.2.5 (b) makes a distinction between them. I have
looked in the definitions both in 13 and in the IBC and cannot find a way to
clearly determine what the difference would be. The IBC defines an Attic as
"the space between the ceiling beams of the top story and the roof rafters".
What would make this area an attic as opposed to a concealed space below a
peaked roof as addressed by Table 8.3.2.5 (b)?

My question is not about best practices as I realize the prudent decision would
be to use intermediate-temp heads in any unconditioned space between a roof and
ceiling regardless of what you call it. My question is specifically what is
acceptable per the standard.
