John, I agree completely with the comments by Travis and Ron.
And Ron is correct that this is an opportunity to educate this AHJ. One of the tools I've used in such efforts through the past is to as politely as I can ask them to "prove it." Of course you can get into a battle with someone and that just turns the discussion into an argument which no one wins. Or it can be used in a positive way to show him he's heading the wrong way.
