On a follow up to this, is there still the provision to just calculate 2
additional ESFR sprinklers under the obstruction in lieu of same size pipng?

I have a situation where the owner/engineer required ESFR at the roof deck -
way overkill and not needed for 18' of Class I-III storage. Now, they came
in and added a bunch of walkways between the racks in an area. So, we now
have 42" wide obstructions below the ESFR sprinklers. So, I have to put
sprinklers below these walkways. I don't see how I can call them in-rack
sprinklers which would allow me K8 or K11.2 as in-racks. That is why I have
ESFR below the obstructions. Now, of course the walk ways were not designed
to have the large ESFR branch line and main sizes supported below them. So,
I am looking at other ways to possible solve this problem created by others.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks again for all of the help.

Can some one help me locate the section in NFPA 13 (2016 preferred) that
indicates when you have obstructions below the ESFR sprinklers, you supply
the sprinkler below the obstruction with pipe size the same as the branch
line and you don't include the additional sprinklers in the calculations?

The old method was to calc two additional sprinklers below the obstruction.
But I believe it has been replaced with the criteria I mentioned.
