Yeah. VA specs I have for this mandate in several locations that it must be
residential in the patient sleeping and bathroom areas, as well as corridors
in a patient ward. Sometimes you just have to wonder. I'm tempted to just
give it as specified.

Notwithstanding flatter patterns and atomization (which are not necessarily
desirable if you have a fire working in a compartment with non-ambulatory
occupants in it who may be breathing piped oxygen), residential sprinklers
are listed for residential occupancies. The building code classifies a
hospital as I-2. Hospitals also may contain Group B and Group A
occupancies of different sizes but a hospital doesn't include Group R. The
Building Code precedes application of any standard in the hierarchy of code
stuff. So if residential sprinklers are listed for residential occupancies
only, and this isn't a residential occupancy, then I don't see how you can
use residential sprinklers. Perhaps a thoughtfully crafted RFI to the
specifying engineer would draw out what I'm SURE will be a most entertaining
narrative.

I was fully planning QR but just that item in the specs to use residential
made me question it.

The building code classifies this as an institutional rather than
residential occupancy. We could go off into the weeds discussing the fire
load and whether the furnishings in a hospital room hold more or less
potential energy than upholstered furniture in a home. In my mind, the
distinguishing factor is the presence of pressurized medical gasses which I
think is a deal breaker when it comes to residential sprinklers.

Residential sprinklers or QR? I-2 occupancy. Specs call for residential.
I've always done these as QR.
