According to my records, there has been a “3000 sq. ft. rule” as long as there have been area / density curves.
In the 1973 and 1974 editions, there was a note below Table 2-2.1(B) that said: For combustible construction with wet or dry system the minimum area of application shall be 3,000 sq. ft. Then for the 1975 edition the note was modified to say: For construction having unsprinklered combustible concealed spaces, the minimum area of sprinkler operation shall be 3,000 square feet.
