Matt,

The UL 203 and FM testing did not find their way into the standard, however the ACI pre-qualification criteria was included beginning with the 2010 edition.  My memory of those discussions from so long ago is that this was added to -13 after some discussions and input from member of the committee who were structural engineers.

ACI 355.2 covers the pre-qualifications of such post-installed anchors, and ACI 318 deals with building code requirements for structural concrete.  An ICC-ESR document provides information on anchors manufactured by various companies (Hilti, Powers, Simpson, etc) and the capabilities of their products to meet the criteria established in 355.2.

Please note that there is no such requirement in -13 for pre-set anchors in concrete, or for anchors used as a means to fasten the hanger to the structure.

As I am a current principal member of the NFPA 13 hanging and bracing committees, please see the disclaimer below.

sincerely,

I am looking at selecting concrete anchors for a project with seismic
requirements, and I am curious about the various approvals that are out there.

I have seen various types of approvals: ACI 355.2; ACI 318; ICC-ESR; UL
203/203A; FM approved, UL listed

As far as I can tell - the ACI and ICC-ESR approvals meet NFPA requirements, but does
anyone know about the others? Some product websites claim that they can be used in
seismic areas since they are tested in accordance with UL 203. Many are FM approved, but
the FM approval just says "approved for supporting pipe hangers" and not much
else. Does anyone know if those listings actually meet the code intent?

Thanks!

Matt
