Look at NFPA 13 (2019 ed) FIGURE A.9.5.5.3.1.2 Sprinkler Location Below
Obstruction.

The sprinkler is no longer required to be literally beneath the obstruction.

As long as it is within 3” of the edge and between 1” and 12” below, it
satisfies the requirement for “beneath (under)”.

Subject: [Sprinklerforum] ESFR Sprinkler Under Obstruction

Hi everyone,

Per NFPA-13 i can´t find if it’s mandatory to install a sprinkler under the
HVAC extraction Grill, the size of the duct it is clearly an obstruction and
the option i have been thinking is to install the sprinkler with a baffle
under the grill.

Does anyone know if this is correct or have any other solution?

Thank you.
