Additional information:
NFPA is developing a new standard called

Standard on Fire Protection of Cannabis Growing and Processing Facilities

It’s release date is to to be determined by my educated guess is the 2026 or 2027.

NFPA does have a sense of humor. The number for this standard will be NFPA 420.

Your AFSA Technical Team is monitoring the development of this standard and we have submitted applications to have AFSA representation on the Technical Committee CGP-AAA.

I just got through doing a room with 15 ft high racks that can be moved side-to-side for access. Similar to a medical records storage system. In-rack sprinklers were not an option. I based the design on multiple row rack storage and used a CMSA sprinkler. There is no realistic way to provide sprinklers in or under a moving object.

Since they are moveable, they should fall under 9.5.5.3.2 (2019 edition). Your situation sounds like it does create a space for a shielded fire so that may need to be taken into consideration in the ceiling design.

We have a cannabis grow room with racks that move 3 feet side to side along tracks – to allow a dense pack of racks, but then they can move for access to the plants.

The Fire Department would like in-racks under the top level since the plants are set on large plastic trays that would block ceiling level sprinkler discharge.

Does anyone have experience providing in-racks on moving racks? Any idea what product would be suitable to provide 3’ of travel for a moving in-rack system?

Thanks!

Matt
