K factor is simply a ratio of pressure and GPM discharged and can be assigned
to an orifice, or an orifice and piping etc. Dry barrel sprinklers are not a
simple piece of empty schedule 40 pipe or whatever, you don’t adjust for the
barrel length unless the manufacturer tells you to, because you can’t unless
they provided the friction loss characteristics of the barrel, which they don’t.

Subject: [Sprinklerforum] Re: Dry Sprinkler K-Factor

Since the connection point has a large opening and the “K Factor” has to do
with the smaller opening size of the fire sprinkler itself then the “K Factor”
should be added at the fire sprinkler head itself. Mike Stewart (843) 490-8366

The K factor has to do with discharge, so it should be applied at the
sprinkler, unless noted otherwise by the manufacturer. If they are to be taken
at the POC, then the K factor would be modified per length of sprinkler in the
literature. Kind of like how Autosprink does it.

Is the k-factor for a dry sprinkler to be applied at the sprinkler, or at the
point of connection to the piping network? I understand things like the
Victaulic Dry Flex sprinkler have the k-factor at the POC. What about all
other dry sprinklers? POC or sprinkler orifice?
