We have an existing building that does not require fire sprinklers but does
have "limited area sprinkler protection" for the openings through smoke/fire
walls for conveyors. The system is old and utilizes the obsolete Tyco Thermal
Control Valve at each opening to make it a mini deluge system for one open
nozzle sprinkler at each opening. I cannot find anything in NFPA 13(2019) or
the IBC (2021) that would allow this now. The owner wants to remove the TCV at
each opening because they are starting to fail. The areas are fully heated and
it just doesn't make sense to me why they used a TCV to control one sprinkler
with the bulb removed. The TCV had a 200F solder link in it to activate it
with the open nozzle sprinkler literally 6in away from the unit. Could I just
remove the TCV and install a sprinkler with a bulb at each opening?

Thank you,
