TECHNICAL UPDATE
OCTOBER 26, 2006
-------------------------------

NICET'S EXTREME CHANGE

NICET recently made a statement in a letter to the Illinois State Fire Marshal that causes extreme concern. In addressing the preparation of fire sprinkler system layout documents for a contractor, they said:

"It is NICET's position that these documents should only be prepared by a NICET Level III certificate holder, if they are being prepared under the direct supervision and control of a NICET Level IV certificate holder, a licensed professional engineer, or a registered architect. Otherwise they should be prepared by a NICET Level IV certified holder. The NICET Level III certificate holder simply has not demonstrated sufficient knowledge and experience to be tasked with this level of responsibility without sufficient professional oversight."

We have asked them what experience has prompted them to demote the classification of Certified Engineering Technologist. We pointed out that many states use NICET III as an acceptable means to prove competency and have had a long and successful history relying upon this classification to work independently. We have also pointed out that this change will be extremely disruptive to the sprinkler industry without providing any benefit to society. That's not even considering that there is probably only 1/10 the number SET's needed to fulfill this role.

AFSA is adamantly opposed to this change by NICET. We have officially asked them to rescind this position. We also encourage all our members, especially those that are NICET certified, to share your thoughts with them. Send your messages to:
