TECHNICAL UPDATE
JUNE 9, 2010
-----------------

“We are performing sprinkler inspections on older residential type systems. We
have noted on our inspection form that no hydraulic plate is on the system.
When the inspection is reviewed by the fire marshal, they are requesting a
sign. Are hydraulic signs required per NFPA 13D or NFPA 25?”

We have reviewed the 2008 Edition of NFPA 25 and the 2010 Edition of NFPA 13D
as the applicable standards. Our informal interpretation is that the standards
do not require a hydraulic data plate for NFPA 13D applications.

The requirement for a hydraulic data plate or placard (as often called but
technically labeled the Hydraulic Design Information Sign) is part of NFPA 13
(section 24.5). NFPA 13D has no such requirement. It's also interesting to note
that IFC section 901.6.1 requires inspections per NFPA 25. NFPA 13D systems are
explicitly excluded from the scope of NFPA 25 according to section 1.1.3. As
such, inspections aren't even required by the codes. However, keep in mind in
the future that there will be a change in the 2012 Edition of the IBC for NFPA
13D systems classified as Institutional or “I” occupancies. Institutional or
“I” occupancies using the NFPA 13D allowance in IBC will require a hydraulic
placard and inspection as if it was a NFPA 13R system.
