Is it acceptable to attach the trapeze pipe to the rod using a top-beam clamp in the end of the pipe rather than hanger rings?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that the proposed arrangement must be according to the listing of the clamps attaching to the trapeze member. Beam clamps aren't ordinarily attached to the ends of the trapeze span pipe. Clamps normally attach to a flat surface like angle iron, not to the curved surface of a pipe. A structural engineer should be consulted in this case to determine whether the beam clamp can be tightened enough and adequately grip the pipe ends. The manufacturers of the clamps may also have limitations on what the clamps attach to from their listings. For example, one manufacturer indicates it is UL Listed for top or bottom of beam. There is no indication it can be used for attachment to the ends of the trapeze pipe. Consult with the manufacturer's data sheet to verify its proper use according to listings. Section 9.1.1.6.5 indicates that all components of each hanger assembly that attach to a trapeze member shall conform to 9.1.1.4 and be sized to support the suspended sprinkler pipe. Section 9.1.1.4 addresses listings of hanger components. An exception to using beam clamps on the ends of the trapeze span is in accordance with Section 9.1.1.6.4.
