The exterior front porch will require protection per the IBC. Is the porch considered a part of the dwelling space or is it considered per section 7.2 as outside of the dwelling space?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 edition as the applicable standard and the 2012 edition of the IBC as the applicable code as well as the 2013 edition of NFPA 13R. Our informal interpretation is that the discharge criteria are not specified by the IBC. The bottom line is that the hydraulic design criteria for the balconies will be per NFPA 13R. The main question is do we apply the criteria for "within" or "outside" the dwelling unit. NFPA 13R does not provide guidance for balconies but it does address open breezeways where that seems to apply to this situation. Section 7.2.1 says that for areas outside the dwelling unit, the design discharge and design area criteria shall comply with NFPA 13, unless permitted by 6.4.7 and 7.2.2. The 2013 edition of NFPA 13R did change "and" to "or" as a grammatical change so you don't have to meet both sections. Section 7.2.1.1 then says that the number of design sprinklers for a corridor or breezeway outside the dwelling unit shall include up to the four most hydraulically demanding adjacent sprinklers. Further into this section, 7.2.3 clarifies that where residential sprinklers are permitted outside the dwelling unit in accordance with 6.4.7, the discharge criteria shall be in accordance with 7.1.1.2. Section 6.4.7 addresses the types of spaces for the use of residential sprinklers outside of dwelling units as lobbies not in hotels and motels, foyers, corridors, halls, lounges, and other areas with fire loads similar to residential fire loads. Thus a porch would apply. The discharge specified by 7.1.1.2 indicates that the system shall provide at least the flow required to produce a minimum discharge density of 0.05 gpm/sq. ft. to the design sprinklers. As noted by 7.2.1.1, this will include up to the four most hydraulically demanding adjacent sprinklers.
