NFPA 13R - Shadowing

The previous Technical Update covered the changes to shadowing in the 2013
edition
of NFPA 13. This will address changes to references to shadow areas in the NFPA
13R standard. First, shadow area is defined in Section 3.3.10 as the dry floor
area
within the protection area of a sprinkler created by the portion of sprinkler
discharge
that is blocked by a wall or partition. New annex material was also added to the
definition explaining that water discharged from a sprinkler does not travel in
a straight line like a beam of light.

Unlike NFPA 13 that does not place a fixed amount on shadow areas, the NFPA 13R
does place limits on shadow areas. The cumulative dry areas are not to exceed 15
sq. ft. in the protection area per sprinkler. The 2010 edition allowed shadow
areas
but placed a limit on compartments of 800 sq. ft. or less. That limitation is
gone
in the 2013 edition. Section 6.4.6.3.3.1 says that shadow areas shall be
permitted
in the protection area of a sprinkler as long as the cumulative dry areas do not
exceed 15 sq. ft. per sprinkler. This is an increase in area from the 2010
edition
where it limited individual shadow areas not to exceed 3 sq. ft., summation of
shadowed
areas could not exceed 12 sq. ft. per compartment, and the maximum total
summation
of shadow areas not to exceed 30 sq. ft. per dwelling unit. The new criteria
seems
to be a more simplistic approach to apply.

Section 6.4.6.3.3.2 allows shadow areas in corridors up to 2 ft in depth and up
to 9 ft in length behind sidewall sprinklers. This is helpful for corridors
where
the doors indent from the corridor wall on which a sidewall sprinkler is to be
located.
A new Figure 6.4.6.3.3.2 was added for clarification in the standard.

Section 6.4.6.3.3.3 deals with small areas created by architectural features
such
as planter box windows, bay windows, and similar features. No additional
sprinkler
protection is required where there is no additional floor area created by the
architectural
feature. When there is additional floor area created by an architectural
feature,
no additional sprinkler protection is required provided all of the following
conditions
are met: (a) The floor area shall not exceed 18 sq. ft.; (b) The floor area
shall
not be greater than 2 ft in depth at the deepest point of the architectural
feature
to the plane of the primary wall where measured along the finished floor; (c)
The
floor shall not be greater than 9 ft in length where measured along the plane of
the primary wall; and (d) Measurement from the deepest point of the
architectural
feature to the sprinkler shall not exceed the maximum listed spacing of the
sprinkler.
The last part of this section clarifies that the hydraulic design is not
required
to consider the area created by the architectural feature.

Annex A.6.4.6.3.1 is repeat material from the 2010 edition regarding shadow
areas.
New figures were added in the annex as Figure A.3.3.10 Shadow Area Created by
Wall,
Figure A.6.4.6.3.3.1(a) Example of Shadow Areas (SSU/SSP), and Figure
A.6.4.6.3.3.1(b)
Example of Shadow Areas (HSU) to clarify the intent in the application of shadow
 areas.
