Residential sidewall sprinklers were installed as an alternative along beams and the deflector is aligned parallel with the slope. How far can the sidewall sprinkler be below the peak of the ceiling?" In response to your question we have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that the manufacturer's installation guide for residential sprinklers provides this guidance for spraying across the slope. Section 8.10.3.5 indicates that where sprinklers are installed along sloped ceilings, the sprinkler shall maintain the minimum listed spacing, but no less than 8 ft, measure in the plan view from sprinkler to another as shown in Figures 8.10.3.5(a) and (b). Although the figures show pendent sprinklers, this section does not specifically indicate whether it does or does not apply to sidewall sprinklers that would spray across the slope. The maximum distance of the sprinkler from the peak is not shown in the figure. Section 8.10.4.2 says that sidewall sprinklers shall be positioned so that the deflectors are within 4 in. to 6 in. from the ceiling unless the listing allows greater distances. This statement does not provide clarity to your question. Since the NFPA 13 standard does not address this specific application, the manufacturer's residential sprinkler installation guides were referenced for guidance. The installation guide does specifically address your application and shows a minimum of 8 ft between sprinklers. The distance from the peak for both pendent and sidewall sprinklers (that spray across the slope) shows a maximum distance of 3 ft. Note that the distance of sprinkler from the peak along the slope is one half the maximum sprinkler spacing for the coverage area.
