AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues May 10, 2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pipe Penetration in Rated Stairwell "There is a 2 story building of noncombustible construction with a cast in place stair from the 1st to 2nd floor. A fire sprinkler line was designed to penetrate upper lever of noncombustible stair, provide protection in combined stairwell per NFPA 13, and continue through to feed a weight room on the opposite side. The architect of record is stating per IBC/IFC 1022.4 all sprinklers in an "existing enclosure" does not apply. Fire sprinkler system is being requested to be routed around stair enclosure. Typical applications such as multi-floor buildings utilizing a combination sprinkler stand pipe has the pipe entering the stairwell and sprinkler system exit to adjacent floors along with the main drain/gang piping. Would this example apply to the stairwell in question?" In response to your question we have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 edition that you indicated as the applicable standard and the IBC, 2009 edition that you indicated as the applicable code. Our informal interpretation is that the IBC allows for sprinkler piping to penetrate the rated stair enclosure. Section 1022.4 Penetrations of the IBC states, "Penetrations into and openings through an exit enclosure are prohibited except for required exit doors, equipment and ductwork necessary for independent ventilation or pressurization, sprinkler piping, standpipes, electrical raceway serving the exit enclosure and terminated at a steel box not exceeding 16 square inches." This section explicitly gives an exception for sprinkler piping. The 2012 edition also has similar wording. As such, the sprinkler piping can pass through as long as the penetrations are sealed per Section 713. Sprinkler pipe penetrations on each floor are no different than a pipe penetrating across the rated enclosure.
