AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues August 30, 2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Protection of Steel Underground Piping "We have an interior sprinkler riser assembly and need to drop down through the concrete floor with a 4 in. galvanized fire department connection (FDC) pipe to a grooved 90 degree elbow. The pipe will turn horizontally below the floor and run about 20 ft with schedule 10 galvanized pipe to a wall type FDC which will end up about 2 to 3 ft above the exterior grade. The 4 in. by 20 ft galvanized pipe below the floor will be backfilled and have a plastic vapor barrier on top. A 4 in. concrete slab will be poured on top. Is the galvanized pipe below the slab considered corrosion resistant or must it also be coated in a black asphalt type substance (the grooved fittings are already coated)?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition that you indicated as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that the pipe must be coated and wrapped. Section 10.1.3 requires the exterior of the pipe to be coated and wrapped. Proposals regarding the use of underground steel pipe included allowance for eternally galvanized pipe but the committee did not include this option.
