AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues October 2, 2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sprinkler at Bottom of Stair Shafts "Is it the intent that the head be underneath the lowest landing, typically the mid-landing, or underneath the lowest main floor landing or both since coverage under one will typically not spray over the full floor area below the other?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that it is the intermediate landing. The technical committee has been wrestling with the issue for several cycles. In the 2007 edition it stated in noncombustible shafts to place the sprinkler at the top and under the first landing at the bottom of the shaft in Section 8.15.3.2.1. In the 2010 edition it was modified to say under the first accessible landing at the bottom of the shaft. The issue of concern is despite the code saying not to store things in the stairways, it happens. This occurs when there is an offset for example the stairs go up the left side of the shaft and the floor continues to the right of the stairs to the rear of the shaft. In this location you are standing under the first intermediate landing. That is where the sprinkler goes. The landing directly over the door is the second landing. If the open floor beside the stairs is enclosed, then the use of the stairs typically keeps the remaining area clear. As such, the technical committee has deleted the need for the sprinkler at the bottom for such conditions.
