Nursing Home Bathrooms
"We have 100 bathrooms of a nursing home that have a 1-piece fiberglass shower
fixture.
The actual bathroom size is approximately 5 ft x 6 ft noncombustible
construction.
There is a bulkhead from the ceiling down to the top of the shower stall that
varies
between 11 in. to 15 in. A state inspector states that the showers need
protection.
There are residential sprinklers installed in the bathrooms. Are sprinklers
also
required in the showers?"
Our informal interpretation is that one sprinkler in the bathroom is all that
should
be required. We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2007 edition that you indicated as the
applicable
standard.
The 2013 edition of NFPA 13 includes a new section to specifically address this
issue. Section 8.5.5.4 Closets states, "In all closets and compartments,
including
those closets housing mechanical equipment, that are not larger than 400 cu. ft.
in size, a single sprinkler at the highest ceiling space shall be sufficient
without
regard to obstructions or minimum distance to the wall." The bathroom is a
compartment
and this application qualifies to apply this section. This concept has been
included
in NFPA 13R for many cycles, but it is now included in the 2013 edition of NFPA
13.
The issue of obstructions in compartments that creates shadowing has always been
allowed by NFPA 13 and is considered acceptable. Although a specified allowed
amount
of shadowing has not been quantified, there has been additional attention to
this
issue in more current editions of NFPA 13. This additional information does not
change the requirements of the 2007 edition but simply helps clarify the intent
of that edition. For that reason, this interpretation includes this information.
It may also be helpful in incorporating information from later editions of the
standard to realize that the 2007 edition of NFPA 13 allows alternate
arrangements
to be applied, per Section 1.6, as long as the level of safety prescribed by the
standard is not lowered. What better means for assuring an equivalent
application
than acceptance of or statements by the NFPA 13 technical committee. Thus minor
obstructions are very common and the intent of NFPA 13 for providing protection
throughout the area is satisfied without covering every square inch of floor
area
and without installing an additional sprinkler. This is of particular value
since
one of the main objectives of the sprinkler system is to keep the upper layer
cool,
preventing flashover, thus controlling the fire. This is supported by Annex
A.8.4.5.1
that states, "The response and water distribution pattern of listed residential
sprinklers have been shown by extensive fire testing to provide better control
than
spray sprinklers in residential occupancies. These sprinklers are intended to
prevent
flashover in the room of fire origin, thus improving the chance for occupants to
escape or be evacuated." As such, no additional sprinklers are needed to cover
the shower areas within these rooms.
