Beam Near Wall Creates Pocket

"We have a metal building where the end wall has a column 1ft - 10½-inches
inside
the face of the wall to the centerline of columns which also creates a 16-inch
gap
from inside face of the wall girts (horizontal structural member) to the inside
face of the beam flange. We have a branch line 7 ft - 5 ½-inches from the
inside
face of the wall and 5 ft - 7 ½-inches to the centerline of the column. The
standard
response heads will not spray to the wall due to the beam depth in some areas as
it varies in depth from 50-inches to 22-inches. Does the 16-inch gap require
protection?
Where should sprinklers be located down low below the beam or in the 16-inch
space
within 12-inches from the deck?"

We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that additional sprinklers are required between the beam and
the wall.

The beam creates a ceiling pocket against the wall. The problem with applying
the
ceiling pocket rules of Section 8.6.7.2 is that there is a problem with meeting
item number 3 that indicates that the entire floor under the unprotected ceiling
pocket is protected by the sprinklers at the lower ceiling elevation. The
other
problem is number 6 where quick response sprinklers were not used. The beam is
more of a valance rather than a ceiling pocket. The beam obstructs the
sprinkler
at the ceiling level where the entire floor area is not protected. Thus
additional
sprinklers are needed on the other side of the beam. If the sprinklers could be
located to meet the obstruction rules of Section 8.6.5.1.2 (Beam Rule), then
additional
sprinklers would not be needed since the entire floor area would be protected.
Confusion can exist between applying the requirements of obstruction against
walls
(Soffit Rule) and the obstructions to sprinkler discharge (Beam Rule). The
advantage
of the Soffit Rule over the Beam Rule is that it allows you to locate a
sprinkler
closer to the wall than what would be allowed by the use of the Beam Rule. Note
that to qualify as a soffit, it must have a solid bottom plate. You cannot
apply
the soffit application to a valance, which will not be enclosed at the bottom
plane.
If the sprinklers cannot meet either application, an additional sprinkler will
have to be installed on the other side of the valance. The beam is too deep in
this application to meet the Beam Rule. Next, let's address your concern of
shadowing
in the corner created by the column. This is a mute point since it appears that
sprinklers will be required between the beam and the wall. If you can meet the
obstruction rules, you can ignore dry shadow areas created by architectural
features.
Some material was added to the 2013 edition of NFPA 13 in A.8.1.1(3) that
states,
"Notwithstanding the obstruction rules provided in Chapter 8, it is not intended
or expected that water will fall on the entire floor space of the occupancy.
When
obstructions or architectural features interfere with the sprinkler's spray
pattern,
such as columns, angled walls, wing walls, slightly indented walls, and various
soffit configurations, shadowed areas can occur. Where small shadowed areas are
formed on the floor adjacent to their referenced architectural features, these
shadowed areas are purely on paper and do not take into account the dynamic
variables
of sprinkler discharge. Examples of shadow areas are shown in Figure
A.8.1.1(3)(a)
and Figure A.8.1.1(3)(b)." Lastly, the sprinklers located between the beam and
the wall should be placed according to obstructed construction rules. Steel
Purlin
Construction is described as obstructed construction in A.3.7.1(8). Although it
may be believed the heads will not activate within this narrow space, there is
no place in the standard that permits the omission of sprinklers. Your options
appear to be 1) install sprinklers between the beam and the wall, 2) install a
bottom
to seal up the space, or 3) get permission from the AHJ to omit sprinklers
between
the beam and the wall.
