Rooms Without Ceilings
"I have a noncombustible metal building with light hazard rooms in the building
with ceiling heights that vary from 8 ft to 10 ft. The interior walls are
noncombustible
and stop at about 6 in. above the highest attached ceiling. The attic area is
also
noncombustible with a 6 in 12 slope. In this building there are also electrical
and mechanical rooms. The rooms have no ceiling and the walls only extend to 10
ft-6 in. above the floor making these rooms open to the attic with some walls
being
as much as 12 ft below the roof deck. How do I sprinkler these rooms? Do I put
sprinklers
above just the rooms themselves, or does this require that the entire attic area
be sprinklered?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that sprinklers are required for the entire attic area unless
suspended ceilings are provided for each room or the walls of the rooms should
extend
to the roof deck above.
The rule of thumb is that you should not be able to stand in a sprinklered area
and look into an unsprinklered area. This commonly occurs where the walls
separating
the room does not extend to the bottom side of the roof deck and allows
communication
between the space above the suspended ceiling. Thus, Sections 8.1.1(1) and
8.15.1.1
literally mean that sprinklers must be installed throughout. However, sprinklers
can be omitted from the space above the ceiling, wall or partition when the
criteria
of Section 8.15.1.2 are met. New material was added to the 2010 edition of NFPA
13 that is related to this issue as a new Section 8.15.22.3 that states, "Where
the space above a noncombustible or limited combustible drop ceiling is
sprinklered
because it is open to an adjacent sprinklered space on only one side and where
there
is no possibility for storage above the drop ceiling, the sprinkler system shall
be permitted to extend only as far into the space as 0.6 times the square root
of the design area of the sprinkler system in the adjacent space." Note that
this
new section has a limitation of the space being only open to an adjacent
sprinklered
space on only one side. This is commonly found in the storage areas of retail
spaces
where the wall does not extend to the roof deck above and exposes the area above
the suspended ceiling. The new section will permit one or two rows of
sprinklers
near the opening above the suspended ceiling space instead of providing
sprinklers
throughout.
