CMSA Obstruction
"We are renovating an existing warehouse for a new commodity. We are installing
a new system with the K-17 specific application control mode (16.8 K-factor
upright).
A 1 ft x 4 ft light is centered between sprinklers with 4 ft from the sprinkler
to the edge of the light. The top of the light is 18 inches below the
deflector
and the light is 3 inches deep. Does the light present an acceptable
obstruction?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition that you indicated as the applicable
standard.
Our informal interpretation is that the light should be acceptable as located.
NFPA 13 does not provide guidance for the overall potential for obstructions
like
it does for all the other types of sprinklers. It simply addresses a few
specific
arrangements. As such, it is basically inadequate. The position of the light
fixture
appears to meet the obstruction requirements but the standard is not specific.
The light fixture is located on opposite sides of the obstruction per Section
8.11.5.1.3.
Although this allowance is generally used to address obstructions tight to the
ceiling,
it ensures an adequate sprinkler discharge reaching the floor. Another
reasonable
approach when the situation does not correlate with the few arrangements in NFPA
13 is to follow the very conservative obstruction criteria for ESFR sprinklers.
Since the ESFR criteria of Section 8.12.5.3.1 is for continuous obstructions,
the 1 ft dimension is the one of interest. In accordance with Section
8.12.5.3.1(3),
1 ft wide obstructions must be at least 1 ft horizontally from the sprinkler.
With
the light located 4 ft from the sprinkler, it does not present a problem.
Suppression
mode sprinklers are the most sensitive to being negatively affected by
obstructions.
Considering this fact and that CMSA criteria is inadequate, applying the ESFR
criteria
provides an appropriate answer, but the AHJ must concur with this approach.
