Looped Dry Systems
"A dry pipe system is looped more than once. The local AHJ is stating that any
system with more than one loop is defined as a gridded system and cannot be
designed
in that manner. Can a dry pipe system have more than one loop?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that this layout is considered to be a looped system.
Section 3.4.6 defines "gridded sprinkler system" as a sprinkler system in which
parallel cross mains are connected by multiple branch lines, causing an
operating
sprinkler to receive water from both ends of its branch line while other branch
lines help transfer water between cross mains. Section 3.4.7 defines a "looped
sprinkler system" as a sprinkler system in which multiple cross mains are tied
together
so as to provide more than one path for water to flow to an operating sprinkler
and branch lines are not tied together. Some confusion may be created since
your
layout has more than one loop, creating more than two paths for water to get to
a sprinkler. However, if setting a two-path limitation for looped systems were
the intent, this definition would specify it as such. The key is that the
branch
lines are not tied together as per the definitions. Excessive amounts of air
can
remain trapped in the system piping when the branch lines are tied together and
that can significantly delay water from reaching the operating sprinklers. The
looped dry pipe systems have to meet the system sizes and initial water
discharges
per Section 7.2.3. Based on the information provided the layout is considered a
looped system and they are permitted to be dry.
