Concrete Tee Construction With ESFR Sprinklers

"A building owner wants to put an ESFR system in a warehouse that has concrete
tee
concrete construction with stems at 5 ft on center and 20 inches deep. NFPA 13
allows ESFR sprinklers to be installed in obstructed noncombustible construction
and installed in every channel. This puts my sprinklers 5 ft apart, under the
8 ft minimum. FM standards seem to imply I can do it per FM but it is not
clear.
Is it allowed to install ESFR sprinklers in this type of construction?"

We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that ESFR sprinklers may not be used for this application per
NFPA 13 but may be allowed per FM Data Sheet 2-0.

Section 8.4.6.3.1 says that where depths of the solid structural members (beams,
stem, and so forth) exceed 12 in., ESFR sprinklers shall be installed in each
channel
formed by the solid structural members. Section 8.12.4.1.6 also indicates that
with obstructed construction, the branch lines shall be permitted to be
installed
across the beams, but sprinklers shall be located in the bays and not under the
beams. This section gives guidance to locate the sprinklers within bays and not
under the stems of the concrete tee construction. Some manufacturers of ESFR
sprinklers
address construction types and others do not. For example, data sheets for
Tyco's
ESFR sprinklers references roof construction as unobstructed or obstructed
construction
and gives examples as smooth ceiling, bar joists, beam and girder, and so forth.
Where the depths of the solid structural members (e.g., beams and stem) exceed
12 inches, install ESFR sprinklers in each channel formed by the structural
members.
Since your channels are 20 in. deep, sprinklers are required in each channel.
When the installation of ESFR's are located in each channel, Section 8.4.6.3.2
reminds
us that we still must comply with the spacing and area of coverage defined by
8.12.2
and 8.12.3. Section 8.12.3.4 explicitly states that the minimum spacing between
sprinklers must be 8 ft. There is no allowance for a baffle between closely
spaced
ESFR sprinklers as allowed for spray sprinklers.

Regarding FM Data Sheet 2-0 dated April 2011, Section 2.2.3.2 gives an exception
to the sprinkler spacing of Table 17. The exception states, "When sprinklers
are
provided in every channel bay formed by obstructed construction, the minimum
linear
and area spacing recommendations listed in Table 17 do not apply to the
sprinklers
located in adjacent channel bays. See Figure 26 for a diagram of this
arrangement."
Figure 26 shows the spacing of sprinklers when installed in every bay channel
formed
by solid structural members. The sprinkler spacing in the bays should not
exceed
the distances in Table 17. When an alternative standard to NFPA 13 is used, the
situation should be discussed with the local AHJ. Other alternatives to meet
NFPA
13 is to install insulation in each channel such that the distance from the
insulation
to the bottom of the concrete tees is less than 12 inches or a suspended ceiling
to eliminate the obstructed construction. Otherwise, you must use another
sprinkler
type that will permit the use of concrete tee construction with stems greater
than
12 inches.
