Roof Outlets for Standpipes
"We have two stairs that can be used to access the roof. The other standpipe
risers
in the building do not penetrate to the roof level. On a roof with a slope less
than 4 in 12, do the standpipes that do not have access to the roof need to
extend
to the roof level?"
We have reviewed the 2013 edition of NFPA 14 as the applicable standard as well
as the 2007 and 2010 editions. Our informal interpretation is that all
standpipe
risers do not have to penetrate to the roof level.
The outlets provided by a stairway with access to a roof meet the intent of the
standard. The annex material A.7.3.2 says only one standpipe is necessary to
serve
the roof regardless of the travel distances in 7.3.2.2; it is not the intent to
extend each standpipe to the roof level in the 2010 and 2013 editions. A new
Section
7.3.2.2.1 in the 2013 edition also states, "The distance requirements in 7.3.2.2
shall not apply to the roof if it is not intended for occupancy." Section
7.3.2.2
indicates where the most remote portion of a nonsprinklered floor or story is
located
in excess of 150 ft of travel distance from a hose connection in or adjacent to
a required exit or the most remote portion of a sprinklered floor or story is
located
in excess of 200 ft of travel distance from a hose connection in or adjacent to
a required exit, additional hose connections shall be provided, in approved
locations,
where required by the local fire department or the AHJ. The roof surface is not
a floor or story where the travel distances from a hose connection would not
apply.
An exception would be examples such as rooftop helistops, heliports, rooftop
gardens
and landscaped roofs, where the travel distances to the hose connection would
apply.
A figure in the annex also illustrates hose connection applications as
A.7.10.1.2.1.1
in the 2013 edition. This figure illustrates that only one standpipe riser is
provided
per roof level where there are multiple roof levels. Each standpipe riser is
shown
to not penetrate to the roof level.
