NFPA 13D Design Discharge
"The newly revised Section 10.2 in the 2013 edition of NFPA 13D removed the
previously
required 13 gpm minimum for two sprinklers not listed with specific discharge
criteria,
as well as 18 gpm for a single sprinkler calculation. The handbook explains the
new requirements are now based exclusively on deferring to the criteria in the
listed sprinklers and allows for the design in Section 10.2 to include up to a
maximum
of two sprinklers. Can a single sprinkler be used as the basis for the design,
assuming the largest room can be protected by a single sprinkler? It is also
assumed
that the room has beams and slopes meeting the criteria in Section 10.2 of the
2013
edition. Previously, a minimum 18 gpm would be required to take this approach,
but no guidance is apparent in the new standard for a single sprinkler
approach."
We have reviewed NFPA 13D, 2013 edition as the applicable standard as well as
the
2010 edition. Our informal interpretation is that a single sprinkler design is
permitted for compartments requiring only one sprinkler at the pressure and flow
indicated by the listing.
The reference for sprinkler discharge of 13 gpm per sprinkler for all design
sprinklers
and 18 gpm for a single flowing sprinkler were deleted. The criteria were for
sprinklers
that were not listed with specific discharge criteria. The flows were based on
early fire testing before listed sprinklers with specified flows and pressures
were
widely available. All residential sprinklers currently have the flows and
pressures
specified in their listings. The reference to the old discharge criteria in
8.1.1.1.1
and 8.1.1.1.2 of the 2010 edition were no longer necessary and deleted from the
2013 edition. Section 10.2.1 of the 2013 edition was expanded for beamed and
sloped
ceilings. This section indicates that for each of the five following
situations,
the number of sprinklers in the design area shall be all of the sprinklers
within
a compartment, up to a maximum of two sprinklers that require the greatest
hydraulic
demand. A single sprinkler design is appropriate if the compartment size is
small
enough to be protected by a single sprinkler. If the applications exceed that
of
Section 10.2.1, Sections 10.2.2, 10.2.3, and 10.2.4 are other options available.
If written guidance is not available per the listing for that particular
application,
then determination of the design area is to be discussed with the AHJ.
