Flange Spigot and C-900 (PVC) Pipe

"Figure A.10.6.3.1 depicts an underground fire service, spigot piece and system
riser entering a building. Is it acceptable for the spigot piece to be C-900
pipe
in accordance with AWWA C900 in lieu of ductile iron pipe?" In response to your
question we have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard.
Our
informal interpretation is that Section 6.3.1.1.1 will allow an underground pipe
to enter under the building, rise up and extend 24 inches above the finished
floor.
The committee discussed the issue of allowing PVC pipe to be utilized in a
spigot
piece and extend 24 inches above the finished floor when Section 6.3.1.1.1 was
added
to NFPA 13. The chairman was specifically asked if PVC pipe would be allowed in
this scenario. As it was discussed around the committee, the consensus was
that
Section 6.3.1.1.1 did not restrict the material and that PVC pipe could be
utilized.
The allowance of Section 6.3.1.1.1 will also appear in the 2016 edition of NFPA
13 as Section 10.1.4.1.
A Public Comment No. 219 was made on the 2016 edition of NFPA 13. This comment
would have added a Section 10.1.4.2 that would've added a requirement to protect
the plastic pipe from direct rays of the sunlight, incompatible materials, or
the
weight of the sprinkler riser on the plastic pipe. The committee rejected
Public
Comment No. 219. You will have to be aware, however, that Section 24.1.6.1.2
will
require that the transition (spigot) piece be protected against possible damage
from corrosive agents, solvent attacks or mechanical damage.
