Use of Dated Sprinklers
"A sprinkler activated on a dry pipe sprinkler system that was installed in 2012
for a senior center. Upon investigation, it was found that the upright
sprinklers
utilized were manufactured in 2003 and found as discontinued. Would the use of
these sprinklers constitute a violation of the NFPA 13 standard in any way?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that the use of the sprinkler would be in compliance with
NFPA
13, Section 6.2.
Even though the sprinkler was manufactured in 2003 and installed in 2012, it is
still considered a new sprinkler as long as it has never been installed. The
sprinklers
have a UL listing as a quick response 5.6 K-factor sprinklers. As with any
sprinkler
it must be installed per its listing. Another issue that should be looked at
with
this sprinkler is how it was stored. As required by Section 6.2.9.3, sprinklers
that are placed in a spare head cabinet must be kept in the location where they
are not exposed to temperatures in excess of 100 deg. F. This would also apply
to any sprinkler being stored over any period of time.
