Stand-alone PEX System for NFPA 13D Applications
"The pipe and tubing allowed by NFPA 13D says that as long as the material is
listed
in Tables 5.2.2 and 5.2.5, it is acceptable. PEX piping is not listed in either
of the tables. However, the handbook lists a table in the annex as A.5.2.2(b).
Does this indicate that PEX is allowed by NFPA 13D to use in any system
configuration?
As mentioned in the standard, a material may be specifically listed, however,
if
it is listed in the tables, it needs no listing."
We have reviewed NFPA 13D, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our
informal
interpretation is that PEX has to be listed for fire protection and a
stand-alone
PEX piping system is permitted.
First, Section 5.2.3 does require PEX piping to be listed for fire protection
applications.
It states, "Types of pipe other than those specified in Table 5.2.2 shall be
permitted
to be used where listed for sprinkler system use." Although Table 5.2.3.2 is
provided,
this does not negate the need for a listing. In addition, Table A.5.2.2(b)
doesn't
negate the listing requirement either. Annex A.5.2.2 says that the information
in Table A.5.2.2(a) through Table A.5.2.2(d) is provided to assist in the
determination
of acceptable water availability. This does not override the requirement of
Section
5.2.2. The PEX piping used that meets UL 1821 is likely listed for fire
protection.
The issue is the description noted from UL that states, "This category covers
cross-linked
polyethylene (PEX) pipe and fittings intended for use in multipurpose piping
systems
of residential occupancies as defined in ANSI/NFPA 13D". As such, UL indicates
that PEX piping can be used for multipurpose piping systems. The NFPA 13D
standard
now references other nonmetallic piping arrangements other than multipurpose
such
as stand-alone and passive purge. This makes the UL description obsolete by
referencing
only multipurpose. At the time the listing standard was developed, the PEX (or
other pipe with a 130 psi at 120 deg. F rating) was only allowed to be installed
for a multipurpose system by the NFPA 13D standard. UL specifically indicated
it was listed for that use. With that said, a fire doesn't care if PEX piping
is
connected to plumbing or not and has no effect on how PEX will perform during a
fire. The NFPA 13D made changes to the standard to indicate the limitations on
the use of nonmetallic piping in Section 5.2. Section 5.2.2.4 indicates that
nonmetallic
pipe used in wet pipe sprinkler systems not equipped with a fire department
connection
and provided with a pressure-reducing valve set no higher than 80 psi shall be
designed
to withstand a working pressure of not less than 130 psi at 120 deg. F and 100
psi
at 180 deg. F. The residential systems handbook commentary under this section
says
that this text, which permits pipe to have a minimum pressure rating of 130 psi
under the specified conditions, was added in the 2013 edition. The requirement
allows 130 psi rated pipe to be installed in stand-alone sprinkler systems as
well
as with the multipurpose and passive purge systems referenced in 5.2.2.3.
