Sprinkler Omission in Closets and Pantries
"I'm reviewing plans that shows a pantry that is 4 ft x 4 ft when including a
wing
or niche that is 12 in. by 18 in. The total square footage is less than 24 sq.
ft. and the smallest dimension is technically less than 3 feet. Does this meet
the intent of Section 8.3.3?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13D, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our
informal
interpretation is that sprinklers may not be required.
Section 8.3.3 does indicate in parenthesis (2) that the shortest dimension does
not exceed 3 ft. Technically, a fire sprinkler is required in the pantry by the
standard. With that said, this wing or niche that increases the dimension
beyond
3 ft does not significantly increase the hazard in the pantry to require a
sprinkler
since the area does not exceed 24 sq. ft. This is supported by recent changes
to
clothes closets, linen closets, and pantries in NFPA 13, 13R and 13D standards.
The 2016 edition of NFPA 13D removed the wording "the shortest dimension does
not
exceed 3 ft". The clothes closets, linen closets, and pantries cannot exceed 24
sq. ft. and the walls and ceilings have to be surfaced with noncombustible or
limited-combustible
materials as defined in NFPA 220. This also occurred for clothes closets, linen
closets, and pantries in dwelling units in the 2016 edition of NFPA 13R in
Section
6.6.3 and NFPA 13 in Section 8.15.8.2 for clothes closets, linen closets, and
pantries
within dwelling units in hotels and motels. The committee statement used was
that
the 3-foot dimension is not necessary since it does not change the size of the
closet
where sprinklers can be omitted. The fire doesn't know whether the closet is 2
ft by 12 ft or 4 ft by 6 ft. Section 1.5 of the 2013 edition allows alternate
methods
if they provide an equivalent level of protection. What better assurance of
equivalency
can be provided than the latest edition of NFPA 13? Nonetheless, this will be
your
decision as the AHJ not to require a sprinkler inside the pantry.
