Horizontal Ceiling
"I have a home with a 2 in 12 pitch and the general contractor wants me to keep
my piping along both walls, high side and low side, and cover the floor area
from
both walls with sidewall heads. I know in standard uprights and pendants a 2 in
12 pitch is considered horizontal, but cannot find anything allowing the 2 in
12
pitch to be considered horizontal in the residential sidewall head section. Can
I spray up a 2 in 12 pitch with a residential sidewall head?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13D, 2013 edition as the applicable standard as well as
NFPA
13. Our informal interpretation is that a ceiling is considered horizontal with
 a 2 in 12 pitch.
NFPA 13 defines a horizontal ceiling as a ceiling with a slope not exceeding 2
in
12 in Section 3.3.5.2 and a sloped ceiling as a ceiling with a slope exceeding 2
in 12 in Section 3.3.5.3. NFPA 13D does not provide such definitions. NFPA
13D
is a standalone document from NFPA 13. With that said, the clarification may be
indicated by TIA 10-3 that was issued for NFPA 13D. This added Section 8.1.2.1
addressing the number of sprinklers in the design area shall be all of the
sprinklers
within a compartment, up to a maximum of two sprinklers, that require the
greatest
hydraulic demand for four different ceiling configurations. Parentheses (3) is
a sloped ceiling with beams up to 14 in. deep with pendent sprinklers under the
beams. The compartment containing the sloped, beamed ceiling shall be a maximum
of 600 sq. ft. in area. The slope of the ceiling shall be between 2 in 12 and
8 in 12. The highest portion of the ceiling shall not be more than 24 ft above
the floor. The highest sprinkler in the sloped portion of the ceiling shall be
above all openings from the compartment containing the sloped ceiling into any
communicating
spaces. Parentheses (4) says that a sloped ceiling with beams of any depth with
sidewall or pendent sprinklers in each pocket formed by the beams. The
compartment
containing the sloped, beamed ceiling shall be a maximum of 600 sq. ft. in area.
The slope of the ceiling shall be between 2 in 12 and 8 in 12. The highest
portion
of the ceiling shall not be more than 24 ft above the floor. Parentheses (3)
and
(4) indicates the sloped ceiling starts above 2 in 12 pitch. The 2013 and 2016
editions of NFPA 13D do not provide the definitions of horizontal and sloped
ceilings,
but has the same information as parentheses (3) and (4).
Technical Update is prepared by the Technical Services Dept. of the AFSA: Vice
President
of Engineering and Technical Services Roland Huggins, a PE registered in fire
protection
engineering; Phill Brown, a NICET IV certified automatic sprinkler technician
and
NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) and Tom Wellen, a PE registered
in fire protection engineering. This is provided with the understanding that
the
AFSA assumes no liability for this opinion or actions taken on it and they are
not
to be considered the official position of the NFPA or its technical committees.
