ESFR Sprinklers and Aisle Widths
"I have an existing ESFR system protecting Group A plastics in racks greater
than
25 ft. The racks are being moved and reducing the aisles from 10 ft to 6 ft
apart.
Control mode sprinkler criteria shows a greater discharge for Class I-IV
commodities
in racks up to 25 ft at different aisle widths and NFPA 13 identifies a minimum
aisle within the general sections. I cannot find similar guidance for ESFR
sprinklers
in Section 17.3.3. Is there a difference in the design basis for shorter
aisles?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that aisles must be at least 3.5 ft.
Lets first look at aisles when using spray sprinklers and single- or double-row
racks. As you indicated for Class I-IV commodities in racks up to 25 ft, there
are separate criteria for 4 ft and 8 ft aisles. You can interpolate the density
between these two points. For racks greater than 25 ft, Section 16.3.1
indicates
that an aisle of at least 4 ft is required. Moving into Group A plastics,
aisles
are required by Section 17.1.2.2 to have a minimum width of 3.5 ft. This is in
the general section so it applies to both up to and greater than 25 ft. As
already
alluded to, the actual minimum width is indeed 3.5 ft. This is stated in the
definitions
for both single-row and double-row racks. Fortunately, this is explicitly
stated
in Section 16.2.1.3.2.1(C). While addressing interpolation, it also tells us to
use the same density as a 4 ft aisle in narrower aisles down to 3.5 ft.
Unfortunately,
this is only stated in Section 16.2. So technically, this applies only to Class
I-IV commodities in racks no greater than 25 ft. There is no interpolation in
17.3.1 but the fact that the criteria on a narrower aisle certainly is i
ntended to apply to racks for Class I-IV greater than 25 ft. Otherwise, we
would
have a major deficiency with no protection criteria for acceptable single- or
double-row
racks with aisles between 3.5 ft and 4 ft.
As for ESFR and CMSA, the criteria refer to single- and double-row racks. Thus
you simply go to the definitions in Chapter 3 and apply the 3.5 ft as part of
the
defining variables for these racks.
