Hi Tomas,
The first error message indicated a problem with your installation, so
your intuition advised you right to try MacPorts instead of Fink.
For the second error, well, it's not an error per se. the [In]/[Out]
prompts are provided by a package called IPython. Unfortunately, its
latest version is not totally compatible with Spyder, which is why
perhaps MacPorts doesn't install it along with Spyder.
The >>> means that you're working with a regular Python console,
enhanced with a couple of scientific additions like autoloading
Numpy/Scipy and treating integer division as a floating point one.

I uninstalled fink and along with it Spyder and tried to reinstall
using MacPorts. I had more success, however upon loading Spyder I know
find that both e and pi are defined but not numpy. Also the console
shows the following:

Also, and the most concerning issue for me, is that whilst>>>7./4.
returns the answer 1.75,>>>7/4 also returns 1.75. This shouldn't be
the case as the former is a float calculation and the latter an
integer calculation.
As I'm new to all of this I can't make sense of the error messages
I've had to try and see if the cause of the error is in there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
